Being born and raised on the beautiful Bahamian island of Abaco, the lighthouse in Hope Town on Elbow Cay in the Abacos, has always been a part of my life with wonderful memories.  Sitting by the seashore with my friends, counting the times it flashed its beacon out to sailors on the dark ocean, or in the boat fishing at night with my dear dad and listening at him say, “Now steer straight for the lighthouse,” or traveling at night between the outer cays, the lighthouse has always been admired with countless wonderful memories.

Now as a minister of the gospel of Christ, the memories of the Abaco lighthouse remind me of the wonderful Saviour who came to be the light of the world.  Jesus said, “I am come a light into the world that whosoever believeth in me shall not abide in darkness.”  John 12:46

The lighthouse was built with concern for people who would be in danger of losing their lives in the darkness of night upon the reefs near the island.  Dear reader, God who created these beautiful islands and you for His glory was so much concerned about you that He sent His only Son, Jesus, to be a lighthouse for you so that your soul may not be lost in darkness upon the reefs of sin.  For without Christ, you are in darkness, for men love darkness rather than light because their deed are evil, as stated in John 3:19.

But Jesus said, in John 8:12, “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”  1 John 1:7 also says “But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth us from all sin.”

Yes, God sent His Son who died at dark Calvary on the cross in the sinner’s place.  “For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.” Romans 5:6

Now because He has risen from the dead you can have a hope in the storms of life and a blessed assurance of arriving safely in the harbour of light, which is the city of Heaven, where the storms of live are over. For Jesus is the light of that city.  There my friend, you will only have wonderful memories for all eternity because Revelation 21:23 & 24 says, “And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.  And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it…”

But my friend, I must remind you of the eternity without Christ the light.  This place is called Hell, a place of outer darkness where Matthew 22:13 says there is weeping, wailing, and gnashing of teeth.  Jude verse 13 says that people who go there are like “raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever.”

There, my friend, you will have only horrifying memories for the many times you turned away the Saviour who could have brought you into the light and safety of heaven.  So now is the time to make the distress call from your lost soul to Jesus, who said in Acts 2:21, “Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.   Just simply call in prayer,

Lord Jesus, I realize I am lost in sin.

Forgive me of my sins,

For I need your salvation.

Come into my heart and life

And direct me to your home of light.

John 1:12 says “But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the children of God, even to them that believe on His name.”  If you have prayed this prayer, then you have stepped out of the darkness into the light and become a child of God, as this verse says.
